We all know that fruits and vegetables are essential for our skin, as they provide our bodies with a wide variety of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, antioxidants and enzymes − all needed to ensure optimum health and glow.
Most national health organisations recommend that adults eat at least five kinds of vegetable and two kinds of fruit every day.
A good way to eat our daily requirements of plant foods is to drink them!
Here is a wonderful recipe from my dear friend Rachael Campbell, director and founder of "Rachael, A Health Minded Lifestyle Company". For more healthy recipes and life inspiration, check out her great website: www.rachaelcampbell.com
Rachael’s Super Green Smoothie
Serves 4
Ingredients:
2 large handfuls spinach
1 teaspoon spirulina
1 teaspoon wheat grass powder
2 teaspoons nutritional yeast
1 teaspoon maca powder1 teaspoon acai berry powder
1 teaspoon bee pollen
A large handful frozen mixed berries
Filtered water (amount will vary depending on preferred consistency)
Method:
Place all ingredients in a vitamix (or other high powered blender). Blend ingredients until a smooth consistency is achieved. It’s then ready to serve! You can use any fruits and greens you like − the most important thing is that it tastes YUMMY!! Variety is important; so, one day use spinach and the next day try kale, iceberg, or romaine hearts − mix it up. You can also change your fruits, mango cheeks, bananas, kiwi fruit, etc...
Rachael recommends to go slow with the greens and use more fruit in the beginning so as to get your taste buds accustomed to the taste of greens.
Enjoy!
Note: Rachael has incorporated the following ingredients (available at any good health food store) into her recipe for their health benefits:
Spirulina: high in protein, iron and calcium − a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
Nutritional yeast: a complete protein source, it is high in fibre and B Vitamins. Also a great energy and mood booster.
Maca powder: increases stamina and blood circulation.
Acai berry powder: supports the immune system and acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory.
Wheat grass powder: high in magnesium and chlorophyll (helps purify the liver).
Bee Pollen: a great plant source of Vitamin B12.
